Never ever we have known so much about the differences between men and women.

And strangely enough, they have never been so much denied, resisted, portrayed in a bad light, and even ridiculed as they are today in many quarters of Western society.

If we want to appreciate one another more, and appreciate God’s wisdom for marital relationships more, we need to learn how exactly we are different.

This will also set a framework for what the New Testament teaches about marriage.

What do Christian “glasses” show us about men and women?

Let’s read once more from Gen 1:26-27:

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

The context for this passage is that this is the pinnacle of God’s creation (we already spoke about the concepts of God's image and likeness). Let’s highlight a few things which are really significant. Some of them (in the West) are assumed to be universally accepted truths, but they are anything but that.

Equality

First, let’s talk about the equality of men and women. This is a big issue today. So much effort is put into chasing this equality.

But here… surprise! When we look through Christian glasses, we see that the equality of both sexes was set out in the very beginning by the Creator.

This is not a performance-based or activities-based equality. It is something bestowed upon us by God the Creator. Genesis teaches us that all human beings – both sexes – are created equal in their significance, and equal in their worth and dignity as emissaries, as representatives of the Creator, and as His stewards over His creation.

Our God sees all of us as equally precious (you too!) regardless of how this world, or one or another society or culture may see us. It’s His gift to us.
