(Continuing...)
Let’s highlight a few things which are really significant.

Unity

Here we come to our second point: the unique unity of men and women. Listen to this (and pay particular attention to the grammar):

God created man… male and female He created them…

God created man: singular form. But then it is unpacked. Male and female He created them: plural.

We could say that the Creator designed ‘man’ (as male and female) as one incredibly sophisticated complementary system: a biological and social system. He did it with certain purposes, and with certain great tasks in mind.
And here are the purposes listened in Genesis 1:

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

This is what is often called the First Great Commission given to humanity, and this mission is given to this wonderful system – male and female He created them.

Rephrasing the First Great Commission, we could say that this system is designed for procreation, for companionship, for stewardship, for taking care of God’s creation, etc. This is about unity.

But at the same time as we are all equal in our worth and dignity and united in a unique way, we are not identical. We are not the same. Not at all.

Distinction

Now to the third point: our differences. This is where Genesis 2 is helpful. It highlights our different functions (it’s worth reading the whole of Genesis 2 for yourself).

First, we should notice how important the creation of humans is in this account. It takes up a disproportionate amount of space. This is because what is described in the creation account is essentially the creation of humanity. The act of creating all of us – all those who will spend eternity with the holy One – all began in that moment.

Now, what are those unique gifts/functions? Let’s look at men first.
