“Helper”: what does this mean?

To some ears, “helper” may not sound very appealing. But biblically speaking, the word “helper” doesn’t refer to someone’s status.

It refers to the possession of certain gifts that the other person doesn’t possess, and that are needed to accomplish the mission.

Do you know who else is called “helper” in both the OT and NT? Yes, God Yahweh Himself. God the Holy Spirit is also called a “helper”.

Does it indicate that He is lower in status? Not at all!

Furthermore, there is an additional dimension to being a helper. Remember, man was created for mission, and we can see how woman was created for relationships.

So, what are her unique tasks according to Genesis 1 and 2? Just as with man, they are highlighted both in Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 before and after the Fall.

First and foremost, the greatest gift, miracle and mystery of all: to create and grow in her own body another human life, and bring forth future generations.

With the woman Eve entering the story, they both together finally have what it takes to be fruitful.

This is the highest calling entrusted only to women, and it is not just about the creation of life (the initial 9-month journey). It is also about nurturing and caring, about raising these new human beings and preparing them for independent life.

How does contemporary research confirm the creation story?

A study by Rhodes found that:
     - 93% of mothers think that their children are the source of their happiness.
     - 90% say the same about their marriages.
     - Only 60% say it about their careers.

There is only one truth about us, and the Bible and contemporary research both harmoniously point to it.
